Light Frigate WIP #1

A mid-late OT replacement for the Carrack. I have a soft spot for the Carrack, but I just can’t quite take the shape seriously. But I figure the Carrack’s slot in the fleet order of battle is a very useful one, so I wanted a replacement with a more Imperial, and less phallic, aesthetic.

This is ~320m long, almost the same volume as a Carrack. Armament will be 12+ MTL and light guns. Very fast, and unlike the Carrack will likely have a small hangar for small shuttles/flight-squadron of light fighters.

I would also love to see a design for the Carrack. I am working on deck plans for it and am struggling with the bridge and weapon locations. Your designs always make these deck plans so much easier because they are well designed.

Any chance you’ll eventually model the Carrack and Lancer? Even if you can’t take it seriously, I’d love to see you give it a makeover like you did the Dreadnought.

Any thoughts Fractal on Fantasy Flight Game’s Raider-class Corvette? In many way it parallels the CR-90, which is sometimes used as a counterpart to the Carrack.

What about Tartan-class patrol cruiser or Imperial class II frigate?

I’m sorry to hear that you’re not a fan of the Carrack’s shape.

I was my hope if you ever tackled it you would be able to come up with an elegant solution for that huge freaking window in the front.

Simplest option might just be to take a page off the Lancer & Star Galleon’s blueprints & reduce the viewports to that relative scale & shape.

That puppy has a superficially comparable launch-bay layout, though don’t ask me where a ship so slim fits a TIE wing, handful of shuttles AND meaningful thrust & firepower for its bulk.

adapt it as a Acclamator variant and I think you can work the space out for it….according to the cross section book there is a huge hangar space for all the drop ships, walkers, etc…to support the army it carries. Also..making the Imperial II an Acclamator variant…you can make the main hanger the fighter hanger and change the boarding ramps to what the pic of the Imperial II has and the top hanger becomes the shuttle/logistics hanger.

Good points re: a combat-configured Acclamator; suppose I got a little hung-up on the wiki’s stated dimensions. At that point I’d say the Imp-II would be well out of any Carrack equivalent’s weight class, natch.

I’ve redesigned the Carrack towards practicality like six times, with middling success. Glad to see the master take it on.

Don’t suppose you have any links to said attempts? Wouldn’t mind seeing even a partly-completed take on placement for all those guns from the old Essential Guide’s fluff text.

Reusing the Indictor’s bridge module? I could see the forward portion, though those struts somehow seem less aesthetically appealing on this design. Might just be me, and it’s likely a bit early to conclude. At any rate I’m digging those outsized nozzles & super-sharp hull taper.

In other news…yeah, you have a real point about WEG’s early picket-pocket-rockets. I gotta give the Lancer a nod for visible guns & a less comically-oversized bridge viewport, but their crews must’ve heard every stale joke in the datapad eighteen times over. You start wondering whether run-ins with Wedge Antilles would seem a mercy.
