A commission from Shiki on the Discord. Turbulent-class star destroyer, a sort of mid-way between light destroyers like Procursator and the Imperator/ISD.
There’s at least 37 quad light turbolasers clearly visible. You can tell they’re light turbolaser rather than heavy laser, because if you zoom in as far as it will let you (the bow-on shot may be the best for this), you can see the three slits on the housing.
This “three slit turbolaser” is an art asset that’s been used a lot of times before – sometimes for heavy tanks, sometimes paired with a slightly lighter weapon: a heavy laser cannon: to produce a highly versatile point defence weapon – the laser half using rapid fire to shoot down starfighters, the turbolaser half for shooting down heavy bombers and the like.
But since they’re symmetrical on this ship with slits on the turbolaser on each sides (and I think the “underslung laser” having a similar shape) – the whole thing is a quad turbolaser rather than a mixed laser and turbolaser weapon.
Locations I have identified that carry them – the bow (5, one in the centre, two underneath, two a very short distance behind the bow tip) – the flank hangars (6 on each side), the dorsal ridge (8) the fantail overhanging the stern (2), the quad heavy turbo lasers (2 on each side a very short distance behind each quad laser) and the ventral surface behind the ventral hangar (6).
5+6+6+8+2+2+2+6 = 37.
There may be 4 more that I have missed, but those are the ones I’m certain of.
Now I got to 38 including the one right in front of the bridge. I think there are only 5 by each hangar though, since 1 of those turrets looks like a tractor beam projector. Playing Where’s Waldo? with the weapons is one of my favorite things about Fractal’s designs. It just goes to show how detailed they are.
I didn’t see any on the centreline right in front of the bridge.
The ones around the side hangars are – Two to the left, one above, one below, two to the right, one above, one below, and one on the ventral side very slightly further left of the left paired turrets, and one on the ventral side very slightly further right of the right paired turrets.
I’ve now found the 38th turret – and 39th – both on the centreline, one between the bridge tower and the first huge triple centreline turret (much closer to the triple turret than to the bridge) – it’s only clearly visible in some of the broadside-on shots. One on the fantail, top side. Again hard to spot except in profile shots.
I think 40 and 41 are also on the fantail topside, further back, about halfway between the end of the fantail, and the bridge tower itself.
Looks like it doesn’t prioritize starfighter capacity with only 4 small hangers. I could be wrong, but I’d guess 36 TIE Fighters and 6 TIE Bombers, with 2 Turbulents = 1 wing of TIE Fighters (72) and 1 squadron of TIE Bombers (12).
It can carry 10 squadrons, which is 120 starfighters

I LOVE the 2 quad laser turrets on the back overhang. It explains why that overhang exists, so that the engine can be protected by point-defense turrets. That we definitely a major flaw in the previous star destroyer designs: exposed undefended engines.
Those engines emit enough energy to propel multimillion-tonne murderous pizza slices at absolutely maddening rates (closest visualiser I can think of is Sprint missile but even that falls short by an order magnitude). If you are dead aft of an accelerating ship in SW it is YOU who are in trouble. And if aren’t within that cone, chances are dorsal or ventral guns can get to you.
To be fair, “dead aft” is a good direction to flee from an ISD from as well as, to some extent, approach it from – the 8 main guns can’t fire in that direction at all, and the engine exhaust can actually be exploited to prevent fighters from approaching you from that direction. In the Dark Force Rising novel by Timothy Zahn, Karrde, fleeing the ISD Chimaera in the Millennium Falcon, uses the exhaust stream, skimming just above it, to prevent TIEs from attacking him from that direction.
That would be much harder to do with a Turbulent thanks to its light turbolaser turrets – and its main battery is positioned better as well for shooting capital ships in that direction – the rearmost port and starboard dorsal turrets can easily target ships behind it, whereas those of the ISD cannot.

For reference, here’s the link to the Turbulent-class star destroyer on Wookieepedia. It’s a “pocket star destroyer” that succeeded the ISD, so this depiction is perfect. There had been no real depiction of a Turbulent to date to my knowledge, so once again, Fractal has set the standard. This is exactly what a Turbulent looks like in my head canon now.
THIS is the direction the Sequel Trilogy should have taken for First Order ships. More compact and more efficient, representing a smaller but (by necessity) smarter successor to the Imperial Navy. I like the Resurgent-class from a design perspective but, like everything in the sequels, the size is ridiculous.
I agree, especially considering the fact that the Imperial Remnants were resource-strapped. Making a few Resurgent battle cruisers just doesn’t make sense compared to something like a bunch of Turbulents.

how long is it? based on the shots with the procursator and the imperator it seems to be about 1300-1400m long?
Amazing design, it’s a pocket star destroyer. I have a question if the turbulent and procursator classes are classified as light star destroyers then would the venator also be a light star destroyer
The Turbulent is supposed to be “mid-way between light and regular”
Given how much bigger its alpha strike is than the Venator’s, and how close the Venator and Victory are to the Procursator, at least turbolaser-wise, I’d put Venator, Victory and Procursator as “light”, and the Turbulent as “light/medium”, the Imperial as “medium” and the Tector and Secutor as “heavy”.
While the Allegiance might be informally called a heavy star destroyer, it’s usually considered a battlecruiser of the smaller kind. Small battlecruisers are often called “Star Cruiser”. The Urbanus is called a Star Cruiser by Fractalsponge and has the same reactor as the Allegiance and less firepower.
The line between “Star Frigate” and “really light Star Destroyer” seems to be between the Proclamator and the Provocator – Proclamator has 18x 40 TT turbo laser barrels, Provocator has 20x 40 TT turbolaser barrels.
I recall a Turbulent-class from the Legacy of the Force novels as a new design – I’m guessing it’s meant to be that.
I see what looks like 8 concussion missile tubes in the bow – smaller than the ones on the Venator, so probably light tubes rather than heavy tubes.
I see what look like the same trench notch quad turrets that the ISD has – I think at one point those were said to be 70 TT per shot.
I see 12 of the new triple turret from the Enforcer class heavy cruiser – on the page for that ship, the yield was stated to be 25 TT per shot.
And I see a completely new triple turret as the main battery (6 of those turrets). It doesn’t look quite like either the Nebula’s triple 70 TT turrets, or the Procursator’s triple 175 TT turret – but it could be a “modernised version” of either, given that in LOTF some 40-odd years have gone by since ANH and over 25 years have gone by since the Black Fleet Crisis era and the Nebula’s introduction to the New Republic fleet.
Given that the barrels look quite chunky compared to the trench turret barrels, I’m guessing this is a new-design 175 TT turret.
So with 36 25 TT barrels, 8 70TT barrels, and 18 175 TT barrels, if my guess is right, it would have an “alpha strike” of 4610 TT. Beats the ISD II slightly (4200 TT). Makes sense given how much newer the design is than the ISD II and how big the reactor dome looks.
They look very big for 70s (they look slightly thicker than the ones on the Procursator, which are 175s). And the whole turret looks bigger than the Nebula’s triple turret, which was a triple 70.
Still, thickness of barrel doesn’t guarantee yield of shot, it’s true. What about the flank quads – are they still 70s as was said by someone on the ISD Redux page, or did that person get the wrong end of the stick?
I also see trench light concussion missiles that I didn’t spot the first time round, as well as the bow ones.
The fan tail, and noticeable dorsal ridge when compared to the ISD, do make it fit neatly in with designs like the Compellor and Assertor. The shot of it alongside a Compellor really does accentuate it as being “the Compellor’s little brother” in the same way as the Compellor looked like “the Assertor’s little brother”.
The Mandalor III and Bellator were similar but a little curvier about the stern engine housing, so the Compellor managed to look like more of a “tiny Assertor” than they did.
Turret size can vary widely depending on how much turret machinery (armor, local shields, capacitors, etc) you put inside the hull vs inside the turret apparatus. They certainly only vaguely scale with size – a 720TT turret on a Bellator is not that much larger than an ISD’s 175.
The major guns on a Turbulent are 6×3 and 2x4x70TT, 12x3x25, and 32 tactical tubes for missiles
All in all, a well designed star destroyer; therefore the Emperor will never approve it.

Venators are indeed light destroyers, as are Procursators. Turbulents are closer to medium destroyer class than light though.
