Hey, Disney and Joe Corroney

posted in: Star Wars | 116

I was looking through the Imperial Handbook at a store the other day.

Fairly anodyne book, some decent illustrations but mostly forgettable. But imagine my surprise when I leafed through some sections about the Imperial fleet:

Now, these looked a little familiar:

Based on the book, the artist responsible for these “illustrations” is Joe Corroney (@Joe_Corroney, https://twitter.com/Joe_Corroney)

So, I’ll be honest. I’m a bit annoyed. Someone takes some of my renders, desaturates them, gives them a background alpha and sells them off to Lucasfilm.

  1. What the hell?
  2. Disney, you paid Joe commercial rates for this?
  3. That’s not an Executor, for the love of all that is holy.

Wow just wow, I’ve always loved your work, in fact it is one of the reasons I started working on a mod for EAW community (of which I try my best to give proper credit to those who worked hard to make the models) but to see this hard work disregarded (or maybe accidentally done but not fixed) is just disheartening. I was genuinely angry when I read this post, please don’t stop sharing your amazing skill! It always brings happy feelings to see our dream ships artistically brought to life, what you do is just amazing. šŸ˜€

Fractal, really sorry these shits happen. 1. Its sick that Disney & its fully owned subsidiary, Lucasfilm Ltd., where the creation of Star Wars was structured under a corporate ownership under George Lucas then before being sold, now represented in this book by: a. Executive Director: J.W. Rinzler, b. Art Director: Troy Alders, c. Keeper of the Holocron: Leland Chee (huh???), could all get it grossly wrong that Joe Corroney did these illustrations without 1st verifying them as his or not. 2. Its even sicker above 3 persons from Lucasfilm Ltd., daring to post their names & titles as credited,… Read more »

Fractal, somwhere on your models nowadays, you need to hide in the greebles (so it can only be seen at a certain angle, when the pipes line up), something like: FUMOUSE or something. Possibly a bit more humorous/abstract than that, but would be a nice way to get the last laugh if they ever pull this again.

Sorry this happened to you again Fractal. Love your work. This is one of the reasons why I am not buying any Star Wars books anymore.

The First Order AT-ST and the Resistance Bunker Buster were also stolen fan designs from the IMPS Fan Film Part 1. I remember getting an ISD model kit 2 years ago with an image of your ISD CGI Model on it’s Box cover.

the fact that they are using your art is one thing, but to say your work is someone else’s, that’s insane, you should bring this to court, copyright is not okay even if you post your art online, at least here, we know who made it and who to hire when we want something like this done

I understand that Fractal is quite acquainted or friends with EvilleJedi, there are concerns this same Joe ripped off things from the EAW community for Rebel Files, namely;

the Torpedo Sphere, it looks a lot like Eville’s model:comment image/revision/latest?cb=20180722152039

and the asteroid dreadnought:
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Asteroid_Dreadnoughtcomment image?width=812&height=594

Either that or weird coincidences again, is it possible Eville could see this? Taking models from modders might be too crazy to be true, but you never know.

i forgot to include what i think is Eville’s torpedo sphere, note how the black plating of these is practically not found on the original artwork of the torpedo sphere

Unfortunately Disney does this all the time. The similarities between Simba the White Lion and The Lion King are highly suspicious I’ve heard. They run right over the little guy however they feel like. I’m really appalled Joe Corroney didn’t object though. Professional Courtesy ALONE should have made him give you credit! He wouldn’t like it done to him, so why do it to others?

And getting the ship wrong is incredibly sloppy of them. The Executor was IN the MOVIE. How do they even miss something so blatant!

PhantomFury

The Lion King example is different though. It wasn’t Kimba recolored, it’s a fully animated and complete work that shared many story similarities.

That is some bullshit. Wtf Disney and Joe c. Fractal, as a star wars fan who is critical of Disney anyway, I’m mad for you. You should def sue them if you can cuz you will win. Why you rant about Disney. They are not publisher of this book and that dude is not an employe of Disney. Both editors of book are also not from Disney.

Well, technically, Disney by owning the Lucasfilm LTD as one of their subsidiaries thanks to Lucas selling it to get out of tax hikes he begged the president to enact for whatever reason is in fact the publisher of the book.

Taghmata Omnissiah

Taghmata Omnissiah

They own it as company but in “data” of publication we can clearly see who is a producer of that book, who manufacture it, who is the lead editor from both producer (becker&mayer!) and license giver (Lucasfilm LTD) side. Who is the art director and what is pretty important who is the Keeper of the Holocron. Persons know by name that are responsible for this book, it’s lore correctness and art. They fuck up their job, they let slip error with Executor and they are responsible for not checking the background of art used in the book. Now, I know… Read more »

I know you probably can’t take legal action against them or get compensation but they need to at least give you proper credit because that is your work.

And if they are going to take your renders without your knowledge and miscredit your work then the least they can do is actually get it right. That is the Assertor Class not the Executor Class even if your not a star wars fan you’d have to be blind to confuse the two they look nothing alike.

I would personally be surprised if Joe had anything to do with this. It’s just too blantant. The assertor model must’ve been licensed to Lucasfilm during the creation of the Essential Guide to Warfare right? I don’t know if the same is true for the shuttle and the ISD, but my guess is they used models they already had. I don’t think they would commission someone to do ships that have been rendered as many times as the Star Destroyer, for instance. That being said, of course I’m not privy to the relationship b/w you and lucasfilm, including the rights… Read more »

I doubt they have the models. I’ve never seen any artist or designer hand over the models. I sure as hell don’t. I’d bet $20 Ansel just sold them certain renderings during his engagement with them. But also, just because they were sold the use for that engagement, doesn’t necessarily mean they can be used for others. It’s all in the contract agreements. But I’ve never seen that ISD rendering used before and definitely not his Lamda. Honestly this crap happens more frequently than people realize and I don’t think it should be ignored.

You should immediately contact both Chronicle Books LCC and mister Rinzler from Lucasfilm. This is clearly a illegal use of your hard work. And this do pissing me off pretty much.

This is downright wrong, to be taking credit over someone else’s work like, probably not even knowing the original source of the images he used, that is just irresponsibly wrong. Even in the Star Wars Fandon Wiki they require sourcing for the images ffs! To think that these people didn’t even bother to check the internet, even if its just a quick simple reverse image search, is repulsive..

Even in private settings I always make sure to credit the authors for their work that I’m using.

This happens frequently in the comics, the artists simply trace over existing models that they’ve found (often from the Sketchup 3d warehouse), Salvador Larroca being a prominent example. For another character he literally just traced over a Spanish TV actress’s photo (Trios=Aura Garrido) I had a similar experience with the artist Randal Mackey, who traced over a model of a Venator I made to create this image: https://imgur.com/MD1zqYA I spoke to him about it and he said he had gone over a pre-existing model, I didn’t get angry about it and there wasn’t anything I could do anyway seeing as… Read more »

Using an existing asset as a template for a comic drawing is certainly different to outright copying and just slightly changing renders I’d say. Giving the credit where it’s due should be the basic gesture of fairness in any case.

Joe Corroney should at least apologize for not crediting you!
But I would guess that there is no legal leverage here, because as a fan artist you don’t have any right to make profit with Star Wars content. Still Disney should consider compensating you out of fairness!

TheIcthala

Broadly true, but I suspect they may actually owe him something (at least credit) for the Assertor, since they commissioned it from him for EGW way back when. They at least should know damn well that it’s Fractal’s work.

Sorican
Guest

it’s still a violation of copyright, even if it is ‘just’ fan art, it’s still art, and that’s all covered by copyright law. Whether or not Disney wants to go after Fractal for trademark violations is a totally separate issue- and quite stupid from a business perspective. Also, as an *artist* Fractal has every right to make money from his work by selling to Disney, or their licensed book publishers. This is, of course, unless Fractal sold the copyright to Disney along with the images. (sometimes, this happens). regardless, I hope you get some kind of credit- preferably in the… Read more »

I guess you need to make a decision about what you want out of this situation. If these were my models, I would be thrilled Disney uses them in official publications. I think my next play would be an official letter from my attorney to Disney indicating while you are thrilled they find your art worthy of Disney merchandise, the fact you didn’t receive credit for the work (credited to some fool) and you are not receiving royalty for the models is highly disturbing to you, and requires Disney to provide an explanation as to why they believe this practice… Read more »

Nope. He did make some for Lucasfilm (such as the Assertor), but that was BEFORE the Disney takeover.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if Disney bought Lucasfilm, that acquisition would include all of Lucasfilm’s intellectual property, right? That being said, this Joe Corroney fellow is still an absolute scumbag.

Sorican
Guest
Sorican

Not necessarily. the reason the main character in Rogue One was Jynn Erso instead of Jan Ors was because Disney does not have the intellectual property rights to the Jedi Knight series of games. Ultimately, it depends on who owns the copyright to the material. it’s not uncommon for for corporations like Lucasfilm and Disney to insist on owning that rather than having to pay royalties every time they want to pull an image out and dust it off.

KurdtLives
Guest
KurdtLives

Where have you heard that? Knoll said he has Erso in his head for a while. I am pretty sure the mouse owns all of what Lucasfilm owned.
Paramount changed hands a couple of times but whoever owned them also owned basically all of Star Trek [until Viacom split itself into Paramount and CBS, both owned by the same family anyway].
