Strike-class cruiser

My version of the Loronar Strike cruiser/star frigate from the old WEG and various other media since then. I’ve given it a large modular bay with a variety of different inserts. Modules: https://fractalsponge.net/strike-cruiser-modules/

Can we have the dimensions of this ship, please? I see it paired with the Kronos, which I have the dimension down as 546.2m.

Generally agreed across legends that this is a 450 meter length ship. Is that what Fractal went for?

The arquitens is 325m long. I think Fractal is doing his own thing and I’m alright with it. Maybe he will release a full sized version later

Fractal’s “Arquitens/Class 546” is closer to the Class 546’s canonical 381m length than the Arquitens’ 325m. He might well have made it larger still so that it can fit everything inside it that is supposedly in there, I can’t remember exactly.

Finally! The best design for the Strike class I’ve seen. Though I get its a Loronar product, I never really liked the curved hull and Gr75ish bridge tower of the traditional design. It was a little too different from the standard imp esthetics… And the image next to the Carrack is great to see!

Though I do have one issue. It’s honestly an issue that I’ve had with the ship for a while regardless of the individual models. I’m struggling to see how this ship has sufficient power generation to efficiently sustain the sheilding, heavy armament, and propulsion. If the Carrack had to sacrifice a hanger system for power generation (and its bulkheads ig), then how can a ship 100m longer and maybe at the most, 2.5x its volume, have more than double the armament, an extensive hanger system, and, in this particular model, room for a expansive modular bay in its belly? (even if the module has reactor(s) or power generation of its own). Does that Carrack just have comparatively more durable sheilding or meaner engine block to warrant it’s design?

Like i must be just clueless or missing something, but I feel like the ship should be like 525m length, 3.5x Carrack volume. Looking at this arquintens model too, I extend my query. They just seem upgunned and underpowered… Maybe its bc my whole argument stems from what I know of the Carrack.

I would love to hear thoughts or if anyone can answer my questions, please do. This would end a headache I’ve had for a while lol.

One possible solution might be to reduce the firing rate, the strength, or both. The oversized medium turbolasers might not be able to fire as fast as the “regular medium turbolasers” on a Kontos (a firing rate that I’ve ballpark-estimated, based on one of Fractalsponge’s quotes, at 5 shots per second).

However, IMO there needs to be a reason to put this turbolaser on ships like the Immobiliser-418, Arquitens, etc in place of the smaller 200 GT medium turbolaser.

Because if the firing rate is too low and the strength of this turbo laser less than my estimate of 500 GT (the maximum at which a turbolaser can really be called Medium – after that, we start getting into heavy turbolasers) – then it being used on newer ships like the Immobiliser-418 (a newer ship than the Carrack) instead of the smaller 200 GT medium turbolaser. becomes strange if the smaller turbolaser is a more efficient one that delivers more energy onto a target over time.

3 shots per second per barrel at 500 GT seems like the minimum firing rate for the gun to “still be better than the 200 GT gun”. Alternatively, while keeping a 5 shot per second firing rate, the energy per bolt could be 400 GT or 300 GT instead of 500 GT.

Problem is that since the Carrack has the same gun, any attempts to make the Strike “a bit less powerful, so it isn’t too close in power to the Kontos which has a larger volume”, will nerf the Carrack as well.

Might be simpler just to say “Yes, the Strike (and maybe the Arquitens) is overgunned for its size – and the tradeoff is that it can only use that extra firepower to the fullest, when it’s doing an orbital bombardment at ground targets that can’t shoot back”.

Against such an undefended ground target, having the shields down and the ship not maneuvering from its orbital position, so the ship is “effectively stationary” when channelling all its reactor power into weapons, wouldn’t endanger it.

Also remember that, at least for ships of the same shape, volume scales fast. A ship exactly the same shape as a Carrack, same reactor shape and size relative to its volume, but 441 m instead of 350 m, would have a double-volume reactor supporting double the firepower.

The Star Wars Legends length for the Strike-class is 450m. I’m not sure if Fractal’s version is slightly longer than the Legends version or not. I know his Kontos is 546m and looks longer than the Strike but not a great deal longer – maybe he’s upscaled the Strike slightly?

Probably advancements in reactor tech and tech in general is what made it possible.

Have to remember the carrack was designed and built originally during the clone wars which was during a time that proper warships hadn’t been designed and manufactured in probably a 1,000 years. Like 99% of ships during that time before the clones wars started were under shielded, under armored lacked proper power generation and were under armed. Most ships had probably laser cannons and possibly a few turbolasers.

The republic had to basically start from scratch when it came to rebuilding and designing it’s navy and ship builders had to refamiliarize themselves with building proper warships.

The strike cruiser is a galactic civil war design which came almost 20 years later. During a time where building proper warships was common and ship builders were constantly competing to make the best warship designs possible. And by that nature done the same thing for weapons and parts manufactures.

That competition for contracts would have led to tech to stronger weapons, hyper drives, shield systems, armor, engines and reactors being created to make ships stronger, faster, more durable and have better more powerful weapons.

Thing is, the gap between the Kontos, Fractal’s own less modular version of the Strike cruiser (before he decided to do the actual Strike cruiser) and the Strike, is much more noticeable.

It stands out as the biggest ship with just regular medium turbolasers (40 of them).

The Carrack, with 10 visibly larger medium turbolasers, could (depending on energy and firing rate specified for each big medium turbolaser it has) easily end up with slightly over half the firepower of a Kontos.

And the Strike, with its 20 turbolasers of the same size as the 10 on the Carrack, could easily end up with more firepower than a Kontos, packed into a somewhat smaller volume, if its 450m length is compared to the 546.2m length of the Kontos.

Where is the reactor on this ship, how big is it and how powerful is it? Since it’s a frigate, it should have decent speed, and all of that depends on the energy generated.

The main guns seem to be the same class as on the Carrack and Arquitens, in a slightly different housing.

I don’t know how powerful they are, but given Fractal once said the Carrack should not have a true “heavy turbolaser” (so, by implication, more of a high-end medium turbolaser) and that he’s provided a ballpark figure of 200-500 gigaton for “medium turbolasers in general”, I would guess that it’s a (at minimum) 500 gigaton per barrel turbolaser – and the ship has 20 of them in its 5 main turrets.

Based on what he’s said about the 40 teraton Vindicator turbolaser (that it’s slower to fire than the turbolaser on a larger ship would be) – and that he’s also said a quad 200 gigaton turbolaser would have around 1/5 the actual “energy rate delivered per second” of the Vindicator’s turbolaser, then a Medium turbolaser must have 10x the firing rate of a Slow To Fire heavy turbolaser.

So if the heavy turbolaser has a firing rate of 20 teratons per second (due to firing 1 shots per 2 seconds), the medium turbolaser must have a firing rate of 4 teratons per second. Which, for a quad 200 gigaton turbolaser, mandates all 4 guns firing 5 shots per second, for a total of 4 teratons per second delivered.

Assuming the “Carrack-type medium turbolaser” can manage 5 shots per second, and that it is 500 gigatons rather than 200, then this produces a sustained firing rate of 50 teratons per second from the 20 guns on the Strike Cruiser.

So “enough to sustain a minimum of 50 teratons of turbolaser energy delivered per second” – that’s how powerful the reactor is.

That’s about 2.1 x 10^23 watts, assuming 100% efficiency in conversion of reactor energy to turbolaser energy.

For comparison Wookieepedia gives a peak power of 3.6 x 10^24 watts for the Venator. This means a Venator’s reactor is just over 17x as powerful as this ballpark figure I’ve gotten for the Carrack’s reactor.

Sorry, 17x as powerful as the Strike‘s reactor.

It’s about half the volume of a Kontos, and Kontos is a 5×10^23, so it’s probably 2-3×10^23 or so.

More firepower in the main battery though, if it’s being given 500 GT turrets with the same rate of fire per turret as the Kontos‘s 200 GT quads. Kontos maxes out at 40 teratons of fire per second from the primary turrets, assuming 5 shots per second is the rate. Odd if the ship’s reactor is about twice the volume.

However, the Kontos may not be as dedicated to warship-on-warship combat or space-to-surface bombardment, and be more optimised for shooting down very heavy starfighters.

Might be better at moving, and shooting, and having the shields up, all at the same time, though – the Strike might have to choose between them – maybe it can fire all those guns at full power and max firing rate, but, only stationary with the shields down – whereas the Kontos can be firing, manuevering, and channelling power to shields, all simultaneously.

Another brilliant update. I love seeing these old blobs from the sourcebooks getting remade and “Imperialized” into proper-looking designs.

Also…am I seriously the first one here?
