What is the length of the Compellor class model? 3,5km?

4.3 km (stated specifically by him, on the first Compellor page).

And the Impellor, the carrier version modified from the same basic hull, is 3.55 km.

so what different compared to the original?

The gun turrets mostly (the new one has a few ISD-I type twin-barrelled turrets along the centreline ridge replacing the ISD-II type ones) and some extra 8-barrelled ISD-II turrets on the superstructure to port and starboard (but a few of the ISD II-type turrets on the ridgeline have been removed – so that may even out at bit) as well as two extra dorsal turrets to port and starboard close to the stern and two extra ventral turrets to port and starboard close to the bow.

And the original had 3 large sets of windows, stacked vertically on the main bridge tower, whereas the new one has an unmodified Allegiance Redux/Bellator Redux type tower.

One of the posts on the original page

https://fractalsponge.net/compellor-class-star-cruiser/

suggested that some of what look like 8-barrelled turrets are actually 4-barrelled – if so, that swapping them for 8-barrelled ones would give it a slight firepower boost, as well as the boost provided by replacing ISD-II turrets with ISD-I turrets (those are very slightly more powerful – 350 teratons yield for the whole turret at 175 TT per bolt, instead of 320 teratons yield at 40 TT per bolt.

I have always loved your Compellor design Fractal! Feels like a more sensible large capital ship for the Empire while just looking mean and badass!

Okay so I quickly tried to count up the armament for those who might be interested. I’ve probably got some of the exact counts wrong (especially the PD), so please correct me if you counted differently!

6 twin heavy turbolasers (240TT?)
72 octuple barbette heavy turbolasers (40TT)
64 quad medium turbolasers
384 twin point-defence cannons

The twin turbolasers look more like ISD I guns to me (175 TT). Compare to those on Fractal’s updated ISD I (Chimaera) and his Tector. I get the same count for the big guns (never counted the little ones).

Compellor WIP 1 has some much closer-in views of the centreline heavy turbolasers, and the Tector WIPs also have some good close-ups to compare them to.

This and the Urbanus are my two favourite Fractal designs! 😍😍😍 Can’t wait for the next masterpiece!

My view is that mechanical considerations can be a factor, at least with the largest turbolasers, and that 1 shot per second at the listed power per shot is the normal maximum.

So a 40 teraton turbolaser won’t be delivering shots at more than 40 teraton energy, at more than 1 shot per second.

If a ship has a lower alpha strike for its size than another ship with the same reactor dome (the Urbanus as compared to the Allegiance for example) – it probably is limited to throwing less energy at a target (but maybe being better shielded or more manueverable while firing) than the more heavily-gunned ship.

People keep saying, “iT’s UnDeRaRmEd!” but they’re forgetting the first rule of Star Wars firepower: throughput.

If the Death Star only had the 1 super laser, it’s not underarmed, because the entire output of the reactor can be funneled into that 1 superlaser. The same is true of “true battleships” according to the incredible cross section for the Venator. Venators, ISDs, and (presumably) Compellors would be able to funnel the entirety of their energy output into their primary batteries. Having more turbolaser barrels doesn’t increase the amount of firepower a ship possesses in Star Wars. It’s like trying to fight a fire with 50 firehoses or 1 firehose. If there’s only so much water available at any given moment, then it’s not a disadvantage to have 1 super-powerful firehose blasting water, instead of of 50 firehoses trickling water. One might say it’s an advantage to have 1 super-powerful firehose. That’s what it’s like for star destroyers like the Venator and Compeller. Fewer barrels that kick like a mule.

TLDR: you don’t need a lot of cannons when the few you have can punch with the entire energy output of the reactor.

I was under the impression that certain weapons had power caps and speed caps – that there’s only so fast a turbolaser can fire, and only so much power that can be channelled through one at any one time.

So when a turbolaser is described as 40 teratons, that means it can only fire 40 teraton shots, at 1 shot per second or so – not 100 shots per second, or 40 petaton shots.

Medium turbolasers maybe managing a higher rate of fire than heavy ones – but still more like 5 shots per second at maximum power, not hundreds of shots.

On the Vindicator 4K page, Fractal mentions that:

“I think the firing rate for the quads is reasonably high, and the HTL on this sized ship relatively slow to fire compared to a big ship, so the balance between turrets is more like 5:1 on a sustained basis.”

which, using 200 gigatons for the medium turbolaser and 40 teratons for the heavy, suggest the medium maxes out at about 5x the firing rate of the heavy. 1 shot per second is usually the maximum for a Star Destroyer heavy turbolaser, and a heavy cruiser heavy turbolaser may be slower.

A very pretty vessel, it looks awesome next to the Bellator and Secutor, although I do wonder, in what areas would this thing specialize? It looks quite fast, but very underarmed,.

Leaving aside the medium turbolasers on both ships, I count 72 ISD II main turrets (40 teratons per barrel, 320 teratons per turret) and 6 ISD I main turrets (175 teratons per barrel, 350 teratons per turret): total 25140 teratons.

The updated ISD II has 91 heavy turbolasers (40 teratons each, grouped into 8 turrets with 8 barrels and 9 turrets with 3 barrels) and 8 slightly heavier turbolasers grouped into 2 turrets with 4 barrels each, (I’ve seen the figure given on the site as 70 teratons per gun for those at least once). Total 4200 teratons.

That makes it just under 6x ISD II, not 15x, for the heavy turbo laser battery at least.

When compared to other ships of comparable length, but differing bulk (the very narrow-hulled Dictator and the very broad-hulled Procurator) it looks to be fairly intermediate – much more heavily armed than the Dictator but much more lightly armed than the Procurator (which is a Star Battlecruiser rather than than a Star Cruiser).

With its all ISD-grade turbolaser armament, I’d say it fills the niche of an ISD squadron. Lack of ion cannons might make it more like the ISD-II than the ISD-I in role.

I’m surprised that, generally speaking, we see so little ion weaponry across the capital ship range, but particularly at-scale like this. I’d figure that pin-point targeting of critical weapon, shield, and engine systems would be tantamount to winning any flat out slug match between cruisers. Especially when you’re main antagonizer is so reliant on those systems for their hit-and-run tactics.

There’s plenty of Fractalsponge ships with ion cannons – but the ones that don’t seem to be mostly Star Destroyer or Star Cruiser size – bigger ones without them, seem to be a bit rarer.

The Procurator, Praetor, Bellator, Assertor, Mandator III, Legator, Allegiance, Secutor, and Urbanus, are all bigger than an ISD and all have at least some ion cannons. The Tector, same size as the ISD but heavier-gunned, has them as well.

The Dictator, Tyrant, Dominator, ISD II, Provocator, Gladiator, Victory, Venator, Vindicator, and Proclamator, are all ion-free.

The Aiwha, Velox, and Fulgor (at least in its final iteration) all have ions – though there’s a few ships of comparable size that don’t, like the Carrack, Dreadnaught-class, and Kontos.
