SICK! I hadn’t even thought of you doing a carrack but now that it’s happening I’m so hyped about how it’ll look in the end!

I am really excited to see Fractal’s rendition of the beloved Carrack!

I can’t express how happy I am to see Fractalsponge doing his magic on the Carrack!
It’s one of my favorite ships in the expanded universe.
I knew the multi-level bridge with the windows would have to go if he ever did, but the idea of inverting the slope of the bow section happily surprised me. So obvious in hindsight, but it never occurred to me before.
Speaking of which, are those things in the “chin” of the bow heavy guns?
Agreed, most Star Wars ship designs are hit and miss, but Fractal makes them practical and that is a fact. This is a bit off-topic, but despite my genuine praise, the only thing I didn’t like that Fractal redesigned was the Baslisk War Droid. Yeah, I know some people think it’s dumb as sin. Silly it originally may look, but, personally? If I saw something bearing down on me at high speed with that kind of look and caring that type of multi-weaponry and on top that its more than capable of turning someone to paste with its claws and I was a soldier? I’d piss myself silly in terror before it killed me. I LOVE the Baslisk War-Droid. It looks like a headless horse-fly crossed with a lion or bear in profile.
Agreed, it’s in every version, even the new cannon ones. However if I had to hazard a guess I’d bet those ~trapezoidal(?) structures on both sides of the forward section are supposed to be closed shutters over windows of some kind maybe.
And no, it’s not in every version. The original WEG line art had a panel on the bow that got reinterpreted as a bridge in later art, but having a massive, multi-story bridge on the bow goes against two key parts of the ship’s fluff, specifically, survivability and compartmentalization.

I don’t know how accurate this description is, but I’ve always considered the Carrack to be like a miniature Dreadnaught-class Heavy Cruiser.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t the velox a better version of the carrack?
Different mission and design. The carrack is designed to maintain contact with fleeing enemy capital ships to get a read on their outbound hyperspace vector. That means it will be in range of their guns until they jump, so it has to be fast and tough. The Velox is more of a traditional fast scout, but is also more fragile.
Way back when Fractal posted size blobs of WIP Velox alongside one for Carrack I figured Carrack is basically do-it-all ship with what is basically Lancer’s gun fit slapped on to top of one for Velox and volume needed to house power generation to match, however that skews the chronology of these three. Presumably without much loss in speed.
The massive, exposed bridge was always a silly idea that didn’t fit with the Carrack’s design and intent. Unlike most Star Wars ships, it makes more sense for the bridge to be well inside the hull, behind multiple shielded bulkheads. This has been discussed extensively on the Discord.
A while ago I tried to imagine what the bridge could look like. You can find the concept here: https://countvertex.tumblr.com/
I’m very much looking forward to Fractal’s design!
I’ve seen this before. While it is novel, it goes against one of the known pieces of lore about the Carrack; specifically, that it is hugely compartmentalized internally – to the point where it doesn’t even have internal hangar decks – in order to be more resistant to damage. If it sacrifices something useful and practical like a hangar bay to maintain the compartmentalization, it certainly won’t violate it just to put a bridge the size of an IMAX theater under glass.
I agree – it is hard to argue in favor of the giant bridge. The above was just a study of what it could possibly look like. The best I can think of is that it might be a specialized version of the Carrack with some sort of command ship function operating from the back rows.
There is mention of a recon variant that trades weapons for sensors, but the interior is such a tight design that any modifications would mainly be limited to swapping out internal components, not clearing out major sections of bulkheads. A better option would be to headcanon that all Carracks have a Flag Bridge in case a commodore or admiral was aboard, or said flag officer could command from the CIC. That at least has the virtue of being designed in from the outset, as opposed to requiring major structural changes to the bow.
Loving this. Wonder if he will put TIEs on the rack for scale.
I like the way this model is going. I wonder how it will look when fully completed.
There were some updates on discord, so the model will be completed eventually.
how big is the carrack?
350 metres long, 72 metres wide and 75 metres high in both Canon and Legends, although Fractal’s version may have a slight change in these stats.
Thanks

I guess those are tractor beam emitter.
Oh! That makes sense.
What are those triangular things on the sides of the bow?
They are sensor panels.
I am so excited for this! This is probably my second favorite Imperial ship of all time and I can’t wait to see how this ends up looking!
First i wasnt sure if i wanted to see a conversion of the carrack cruiser into the “Fractalverse”. But now iam.
Should be interesting to see what Fractal does with the Carrack I wonder what loadout he’ll go with.
I hope we’ll get some pictures of it in republic livery I’m excited to see what the final product will look like.
Missing the one trait that defines the Carrack class Cruiser above all others – its bridge. We’ve seen this in all depictions of the craft.
That bridge was an artistic choice made by someone who either didn’t fully understand the Carrack’s design or didn’t care.

They’re sensors. That triangular design can be found on a lot of Fractal ships.
